Nikon FM - Illford HP5+ Kyle Troop Photography 2023

It’s like a Transplants song just writing itself in the parking lot of this pawn shop. I was out riding around intentionally looking to burn some film. But I didn’t expect to come upon this gem. The “Absolutely No Profanity” sign was the cherry on top.

Taken with a Mamiya 645 1000s medium format on Lomography 400. I really dig how Lomo 400 works for medium format. Definitely a fun roll.

I often find myself riding around the roads and areas of where I grew up. If there’s an hour or two with nothing going on, I’ll be grabbing a camera and my keys. This time I headed up highway out of town when I spotted this one. I’ve seen the building for years. But a clear day and the right film lined up. I had just popped a roll of Lomography Color 800 in a Nikon FE. It was meant to be.

Also way rad to see a food pantry happening in this area.

El Camino Out in the Wild

Mount Airy NC El Camino Out In The Wild 1 Kodak Portra 400 Kyle Troop Photography 2024

Didn’t expect to see a rad El Camino in front of a skate shop on a random Saturday afternoon in Mt. Airy, North Carolina. But I did. And I had a camera. So here we are.

Taken with a Nikon FE 35mm on Kodak Portra 400.

When In Metropolis

Nikon FM - Illford HP5+ Kyle Troop Photography 2023

After passing by the signs for Metropolis, IL a good handful of times, I decided to check it out on my way to St. Louis. Traffic earlier in the day kept me from getting there in time to go to the Super Museum before it closed. But the town was cool and the World’s Largest Superman Statue didn’t disappoint. Superman was already wearing his eclipse sunglasses. I don’t know if he’s just prepared, or if his super hero eyes can already see the eclipse happening long before us regular humans.

Nikon FM - Illford HP5+ Kyle Troop Photography 2023

If I drive past this spot, I’m stopping to take a photo. Couldn’t tell you how many photos I have of this place. Every time I find a new detail that wasn’t there before. So much activity for a tiny abandoned building in a wide open gravel lot.

Some of these are taken with a Petri Racer rangefinder 35mm on Kodak Portra 400. The others are with a Nikon FE 35mm on Lomography Color 800.

The Park and HP5

Nikon FM - Illford HP5+ Kyle Troop Photography 2023

Summer mornings in the south are the best time to get out while the humidity is still low enough to not immediately fog up my camera. On this late summer morning I took the opportunity. Grabbed a Nikon FM and a roll of Illford HP5+ to take with me. I’m not very sports oriented. But the symmetry and lines of the fields and courts are always interesting through a lens.

Nikon FM - CineStill 400D

It’s hard not to enjoy walking around Atlanta on a sunny spring day. With a Nikon FM loaded up with a roll of CineStill 400D, I set out on a journey for coffee with some friends. And while getting coffee was successful, the real treasure was the street art we saw along the way. Soon these pieces of art will be gone, covered up, and replaced. Enjoys the views of the fleeting.

It’s funny how many times I can pass by something before it jumps out as something I need to take a photo of. I remember this place being open years ago, when I worked not too far away from this spot. These were taken with a Nikon FE on Kodak Colorplus 200. And even with it being a bright, sunny day, I imagine someone would be waiting quite a while for hot takeout. Let me know if you get faster service than I did.

Ice Ice Baby

I’ve been eyeing this spot for a minute. Next to the liquor store, at the edge of the parking lot. Just waiting for me. There was a roll of 800T in my Nikon FE and it was still dark outside around 5am. This is also from my first roll of any sort of tungsten film. I definitely had fun with it.

Marvelous 3 Forever

Drum tech for Slug. This dude holds true to his name. I’ve never had more fun chasing broken drum parts and pouring beer into a Sharky’s sippy cup to keep it from spilling all over. Every show and every sound check was nothing but solid hits on that kit. Slug loves the drums, you can tell immediately when he plays. And to top it off, he’s the coolest motherfucker ever. Jayce & Butch, I love y’all, but I love Douglas Mitchell just a bit more. Marvelous 3 for fucking ever.

This was the first time I’ve ever taken a camera to a show. You know, venturing away from the usual crusty abandoned shit in the middle of nowhere that I find myself getting into. Between my iPhone and Nikon D750, it was a ton of fun getting some snaps of this art display masquerading as a rock show.

Getting to work on Slug’s Gretsch kit was a fantastic experience all around. My philosophy lines right up with how Slug approaches drums. The kit had an 16×24 kick with 9×13, 16×16, 16×18 toms, and a Ludwig Black Beauty 6.5×14 snare. The kick and snare were set up to be clear and cutting, while the toms were thunderous and powerful. These drums easily sounded larger than life in both rooms, The Tabernacle Atlanta and House of Blues Chicago.
